Southend boasts a dynamic voluntary sector with around 600 charitable organisations actively providing support and help to those in most need and enriching the arts and culture in our community.
However, as locally based groups often known only those using their services, they have difficulty in raising the funding needed to carry out their work; they often have to compete for funds with high profile, nationally known charities.
The Southend Fund was established by Cllr Howard Briggs, during his mayoral year 2001-02 specifically to produce a regular source of income in future years to support charitable activity in Southend. Donations of all sizes are welcome from people and companies who want their charitable giving to remain local. The fund will provide grants which will be available only to voluntary and community groups operating in the Borough of Southend. In this way, The Southend Fund is truly Southend's own charitable fund.
The Southend Fund is managed by Essex Community Foundation, an independent charitable trust, which manages funds and distributes grants on behalf of local donors within Essex. The Southend Fund will be operated to guidelines determined by a panel of advisors made up from local people in Southend.
