Southend Art Club Exhibition
Friday 7th September 2018

Southend art club was established in 1929 by a group of enthusiasts enjoying and sharing their love of art with each other. The club started by a different name and consisted of seven members, Walter Beecroft being one of the founder members. The numbers increased slowly through 1930. At that time there were 30000 residents in Southend.

At the outbreak of the Second World War the club slowed in its activities but recommenced after the war and now after considerable time and by its popularity of artists in the area now has 230 members.

During the winter months, every fortnight we meet at the Beecroft Art Gallery lecture theatre for a demonstration by a local or nationally known artist. In the summer months between April and the end of September we meet at a small cottage on land at Shopland where again we have demonstrations but also paint along and solo painting around a farm.

We take a trip out during the Summer usually June when the members can either paint and draw or just enjoy the day out in each others company. There is also a summer party at the cottage enjoyed by all those that choose to attend and a cheese and wine evening, A Christmas dinner is organised to mark the end of the year and another chance to get together,

Each member has the opportunity to exhibit in one of the two exhibitions we stage each year.

Our next exhibition will be at The Cliffs Pavilion commencing at 1pm until 8pm on Friday 14th September 2018. Then on 15th and 16th from 10am till 7pm Saturday and Sunday. Each member may exhibit up to four pictures depending on size plus one additional and four browsers paintings, which are unframed; these may be in any media. An independent judge is invited along and various prizes, cups and plaques are awarded to the chosen winners.

The public has free entry to browse and buy any of the paintings all of which are originals. The exhibitions are always inspiring, exciting and successful and well attended These exhibitions encourage art in the community with a wide range of media and techniques.
