Ploverleigh Savoy Players take us to the world of G&S with their production of the Mikado coming to the Palace Theatre in July. Gilbert & Sullivan is a truly British phenomenon and certainly much of its absurdity and eccentricity appears in this exciting new production of “The Mikado” The glorious music of Sullivan performed by our magnificent thirteen piece orchestra and Gilbert’s wonderful witty dialogue are all crafted to perfection by award winning Artistic Director Shane Collins and International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival winners Ploverleigh Savoy Players. There is simply nothing else quite like it, G & S is special, and has that rare quality of lifting the spirits, putting a skip in the step, and making life just feel better. Production takes place at the Palace Theatre from Wednesday 20th - Saturday 23rd July at 7:30pm nightly, with a Thursday and Saturday matinee at 2.30 pm. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an old man who transforms his miserly ways after four ghostly visits one Christmas Eve. Scrooge is visited by a series of ghosts, starting with his old business partner, Jacob Marley. The three spirits which follow, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come, show Scrooge how his mean behaviour has affected those around him. At the end of the story he is relieved to discover that there is still time for him to change and we see him transformed into a generous and kind-hearted human being. Southend Drama Society’s production will be as traditional as possible, with Dickensian dress and scenery, to immerse the audience in the atmosphere of this much loved seasonal tale. This is an amateur production coming to the Dixon Studio, Palace Theatre on the following dates Tuesday 7th - Saturday 11th December 2021 at 7.45 pm with matinee perofrmance on Saturday 11th December at 2.30 pm Tickets: Evening performances: £15 Matinee performances: £12 Schools 10+: 1 free ticket in every 10 booked Prices shown are inclusive of any applicable booking fees.

“All that Jazz and Other Poems” is a collection of poems published by The Littoral Press. The poems draw the reader into a vision of life and art which transcends the ordinary. Adrian Green’s poems and reviews have appeared in magazines and anthologies in England and abroad as well as two pamphlet collections and an earlier full collection, Chorus and Coda, also from the Littoral Press. All that Jazz and Other Poems - Review extracts: “When the back cover of your latest collection carries an appreciation from national jazz treasure, Digby Fairweather, it suggests you’ve done something right. Adrian Green certainly has.” Review by Philip Dunkerley, Orbis 185 “…the crowning achievement of this collection are the jazz poems through which Green ably conveys his intimate knowledge of the beauty, vibrancy and perceived dangers of ‘the unclassified music/our parents/did not think/to warn us about.’ ” Review by Trevor Breedon, Write Out Loud “....a collection of reliably well-executed poems.” Review by Charlie Hill, London Grip ISBN 978-1-912412-11-2 Copies are available at a special price of £5 plus p&p (until Christmas) – message Adrian Green via Facebook for details

The Southend Writers and Artists Network (SWAN) was formed in 2011 as a way to unite and promote local creative talent. Our purpose is to give everyone in the local arts scene a voice and a way to share their work with the community. We are an active group of nearly 500 members, comprising many different creative practices including: painters, writers, poets, artists, photographers, designers, singers, actors, directors, as well as arts, ceramics and textile crafters, and musicians. Never has there been a more important time as now to support you local artists! Because of the pandemic we have been unable to run events, talks, or school visits this year, nor have most been able to qualify for any government financial support, which is calculated on commercial rents, whereas most artists work from home. In normal years SWAN members run Christmas events around the town, but this year we are collectively running an online 2020 Fair.  https://www.facebook.com/Southend-Writers-Artists-Network-2020-Online-Xmas-Fair-117919553449500 Please do take a look at our fair and the individual artists homepages where you will find original art, books about your local town in all genres and age groups, music CDs by incredibly talented local musicians, and unique home made craft gifts all at very reasonable prices. SWAN is always looking for new members and is free to join. Anyone involved either professionally or as hobby in the creative arts and lives in the Southend area is welcome to join. We chat on a daily basis, share events and inform other of their projects and achievements. Find us at https://www.facebook.com/groups/SouthendWritersArtistsNetwork
